HOW MUCH IS THE IDEAL BATHROOM? THIS IS THE ARCHITECT'S ANSWER!

14 July 2023

Ideal bathroom size. That's what comes to mind when you want to build a house. Do you do the same thing? Yes, it is common. The reason is, the area of the bathroom will determine the comfort of space for movement and the health of family members at home.

Referring to the Sanitation Construction Guidebook 2022 compiled by the Directorate General of Human Settlement, Ministry of PUPR, the ideal bathroom area is 1.5 m x 1.5 m and made non-slippery with a slope towards the drain hole of about 1 percent. Meanwhile, the area of the communal bathroom between women and men is also different. The men's bathroom ideally measures 1.5 m x 1.2 m, while the women's bathroom measures 2 m x 1.2 m. Both must be made non-slippery with a slope towards floor drain.

In addition, the bathroom door used must match the specified size. Still from the same source, the width of the bathroom door ideally ranges from 0.6 to 0.8 m, and a minimum height of 1.8 m.

Atelier Riri architect, Riri Yakub also said the same thing. Riri said, the standard bathroom size is 1.5 m x 1.5 m. He said, the area of this bathroom is sufficient and you can move freely in it as long as the arrangement or layout of the bathroom equipment is right.

"For the house is not too big actually the size we know, just a minimum standard of 1.5 m x 1.5 m already can, as long as the organization of the room is correct,” Riri told Brilli.

However, Riri emphasized that the size of the bathroom in each house is very relative, depending on the needs. Some things to consider are age and number of family members, as well as activities that are often done in the bathroom.

"But, if you talk about big things, it seems relative. When it comes to bathroom activities, there are actually several aspects, not only for people bathing, there are also several activities that have different functions," said Riri.

“For example, some people like to bathe in bathtub, bathe in shower, then not to mention there are other activities, for example the activity in the toilet for defecating is also different, the other activities for brushing teeth in the sink are actually separated by design, but because space is limited, so it depends on the designer's creativity to make the activity not only normative in general," added Riri.

The ideal bathroom should also be equipped with a water faucet, bathtub or shower, toilets, and drains or floor drain. Bathroom lighting also needs to be optimized during the day so it doesn't have to turn on light. Ventilation holes for air circulation also need to be designed properly so that air exchange from two directions can work properly.
